Dispelling the Lash Myth

We love our lashes! They wake us up, make us look prettier, and save time on mascara. Lash extensions have been all the rage for a while now, with good reason.

Talk to your technician to maximize your eye shape. Discuss what look you are wanting and she can see what would work with your natural lashes and eye shape. Different length, thickness and curl can be used to create the beautiful lashes you’ve been dreaming of!

So now that you have your beautiful lashes – what’s next? We’ve put together a few tips and tricks to make your lashes stay as luscious as possible for as long as possible.

Use only water based makeup remover

Sleep on your back or your side – not on your lashes

Schedule your lash refills every 2 to 4 weeks

Clean your lashes gently with an oil-free cleanser

Avoid oil around the eyes such as makeup remover or skincare products

Do not wash eyes or shower for 24 hours

Avoid steam and sweat for 24 hours

Avoid prolonged strong heat such as ovens

Do not rub lashes or pull on them

Avoid lash curlers and mascara (if you can’t live without mascara, buy a specially formulated one)

Lash Mascara

So technically, we don’t recommend using mascara with lashes (see above). It tends to damage the extensions, get caught, and make your lashes harder to keep clean. BUT if you CANNOT live without mascara, we have Belvada mascara that is pecifically formulated for extensions.

Available at Annie Young

Maintain Lash Health

We are obsessed with Eyenvy to strengthen and lengthen your lashes. The peptides stimulate lash growth and yield dramatic results in 6-8 weeks. It can be used during lash extensions to strengthen lashes. It can also be used if you are taking a break from extensions to maintain that beautiful length.

PSST, Annie Young Has an Odacité Exclusive in Quebec

We recently spotted Odacité in Dress To Kill’s Spring Issue Article Conscious Beauty and got really excited. The more people fall in love with this amazing skincare line the better!

The founder Valerie Grandury created Odacité after being diagnosed with cancer. Although she wanted to cut toxins, she didn’t want to sacrifice the results of traditional skincare. Her moto is “efficacy+purity.” Born in Paris and living in Los Angeles, she combined her French passion for luxury skincare with California green living. This certified organic, vegan & cruelty free, non-GMO line sources only the best ingredients from around the world. Talk about a commitment to purity!

The serums from this line target specific skin concerns such as wrinkles, pimples, or dullness. They can be used on their own or mixed with your current face cream. Like a good diet, it’s important to feed your skin with a variety of ingredients; one you finish one serum, go for a new one! Best of all, these essential oils glide onto the skin, absorb like a dream and smell heavenly.

She also has a range of creams, including a time release cream designed to maximize the impact of her serums.

So go green, go clean, go Odacité!

Monochromatic Magic

In the spirit of the new year and trying new things, why not shake up your makeup routine a little? A monochromatic palette can be very whimsical and unifies your look. Depending on your coloring and the occasion in question, you could try a bolder look of plum or burgundy. For a softer look, try working in natural tones such as browns, pinks or peaches. Lily Collins does it very well; eyes, blush and lips can all be in the same tone, or the blush can be in different but flattering shade.

Whimsical Peach

Lily Collins

Prep the skin as usual by cleansing and moisturizing.

After priming the eyelids, sweep a mid-tone peach shade in the crease. Apply a shimmery peach or rose gold on the lid. To add some depth and definition, apply a brown or black liner along the top and bottom lashes and smudge lightly to soften. Highlight the tear duct with a light shimmer. Finish off the eyes with several coats of mascara. Clean up under the eyes with a makeup wipe or remover.

For bolder brows, fill and shape them in with pencil or powder.

Apply a sheer luminous foundation with a Beauty Blender or kabuki brush. Use your favourite concealer under the eyes. Brush a soft blush across the cheeks starting at the outer corner of the eye and blending outwards.

For the lips, use a nice peach gloss or frosted lipstick.

Oh My Glam Studio

I find fashion inspiring: it makes me dream of other worlds or people that I could be. Beautiful people and beautiful clothes set in exotic locations always look so delicious. After work I like to relax with a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and pour over glossy photo shoots.

One thing that I don’t like about the fashion industry though is the thin, “perfect” body image that it promotes with the help of editing. I think a lot of women become more insecure attempting to reach an ideal.

Enter Marinelle Jean Baptiste from Oh My Glam Studio. To launch her personal stylist business, she chose the girl next door as her model. The criteria? Friends and family nominate a woman for being amazing, brave, hard-working or for struggling with their self-esteem or health. Marinelle’s goal is to glam up everyday women with professional makeup and hair, and then turn them loose in front of a camera. When you look great and feel great, you are empowered to shine.

I fell in love with her concept right away! We had the privilege of teaming up with her to offer the makeup part of the photo shoot. We had such a great time on set with hairdressers Olga Novikov and Kaamini Deonaraine.

With the help of Photographer Gustavo Berardo, Marinelle and her team create glamourous looks worn by confident women!

The lovely clothes were generously donated by La petite robe noire and accessories the by French Fiasco.

Here is a little preview of the photo shoot, the edited versions will be released in the next couple of months.

Get the Look – Kevyn Aucoin

With fall officially underway, I’m sipping chai lattes, taking out my warm sweaters and changing up my makeup. Don’t get me wrong, fresh summer makeup is beautiful, but I love a dark lipstick.

Because a lipstick with red undertones will bring out any redness in your skin, it’s a good idea to use a fuller coverage foundation. That doesn’t mean that you have to be cakey! Go for a foundation with a lot of pigment that can still be sheared out to look flawless but fresh. Try the Sensual Skin Enhancer by Kevyn Aucoin. Make sure to prep the skin properly with toner to remove any excess oils. Moisturize with serum and cream to create a beautiful canvas to work with. If your skin is especially dry, try exfoliating after cleansing, then follow with toner, serum and moisturizer. (You should be exfoliating a couple of times a week anyway).

Since this look is all about a statement lip, keep the skin clean.  Avoid going overboard with contouring and blush and bronzer! I would suggest filing in your brows to create balance. Keep your eye shadow softer so the look won’t be overwhelming.

My favourite dark lipstick has to be Bloodroses by Kevyn Aucoin. It comes in two colors and textures. The Expert Lip Color in blood red has a sheer moisturizing texture and is beautiful for day or evening. The Matte Lip Color is a dark burgundy and more intense. The texture is extremely creamy for a long-lasting lipstick. It takes more guts and practice to do it well, but if you’re wanting more impact it’s perfect.

If you’re feeling inspired, here are a few other Kevyn product suggestions to pull the look together.
